What To Do With Your Pet While Sheltering In Place
Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the Animal Welfare Society has been closed to adoptions, but we're keeping you updated each week with things you should know about living with your pet while your sheltering in place.
Even though you can't actual go visit the pet's at the Animal Welfare Society, you can scroll their website, aws-shelter.org, and fill out an adoption application.
This weeks topic, 'Things To Do With Your Pet While Your Both Home Together'.
We know that our pet's defiantly have a sense that something is going on. We're around them all the time now, and they want to try and take advantage of this opportunity to play more, and take more walks. So use the time to not only play and enjoy your pet's, but to incorporate a pattern of consistency.
Our pet's also pick up on our anxiety, so when your stressed out, they notice it too, which could create some abnormal behavioral issues.
A good thing to do since we have more time at home with our pet is to have the fun, but at the same time amp up your training. Make it fun, like during walks or outdoor play time in your yard. It's not so much your trying to teach an old dog new tricks, just a reinforcement of basic behavior.
Something else to keep in mind is what happens with your pet when you do go back to work, and have to leave them along again for the first time in a while.
If your pet has been used to being in their crate when your out, we have to gradually get them reintroduced to their old routine, just like we have to get used to things when we slowly transition back to semi normal.
Wendy is going to consult with a pet psychologist, and we'll have more on getting your pet ready for the transition back to normal next week on our Pet of the Week segment.
During this crisis the Animal Welfare Society in New Milford is looking for much needed supplies.
Here's a list of items that they are in need of:
- Bleach
- Dry Cat Food
- Canned Dog Food
- Old Towels and Blankets
- Laundry Soap
They have set up a a non-contact drop off point right in front of their building at 8 Dodd Road in New Milford.
There are other ways that you can help too. You can sponsor a pet for a month, or longer. They also need donations for veterinary care. They have some of the nicest local vets who help treat the animals for a reduced fee.
