Wanna Lose Weight? Drink Tequila
When I saw this story for the first time, I couldn't believe it. Is it possible that drinking tequila, my drink of choice, could actually help me lose weight?
Tuesday (July 24) is National Tequila Day, and we all know tequila and country music go hand-in-hand. I'm sure you all know these tequila-centric hits:
- “You & Tequila”- Kenny Chesney & Grace Potter
- “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” – Joe Nichols
- “Ten Rounds of Jose Cuervo” – Tracy Byrd
- “Tequila Sunrise” – Alan Jackson
- “Straight Tequila Night” – John Anderson
Well, maybe the real reason Tequila makes her clothes fall off is actually because she's losing weight!
Now let's get down to the "skinny" on this, because I'm sure you want to get started on your weight loss right away.
According to latintimes.com, the American Chemical Society (ACS) did a study a few years back that revealed sugars found in the plant that makes tequila could lower blood glucose levels and help obese people lose weight. According to the study, Agavins, a natural form of sugar found in the agave plant and, as we all know, found in most tequilas, are non-digestible and can act as a dietary fiber. So they would not raise blood glucose, would help curb that appetite and assist in shedding some of those pounds.
Now you can't conduct a study like this and make these kind of claims without some type of proof — I'm not talking about 75-80 proof like in most Tequila — I'm talking about a scientific survey using, what else, mice.
Scientists fed mice a standard diet and added agavins to some of their water. Now aside from some pretty happy mice, the scientists discovered that the mice who consumed agavins ate less overall and had lower blood glucose levels. The effects were stronger than any other artificial sweeteners tested on the mice.
So, there you go. If it's good enough for mice, it's good enough for me. Now I'm not telling you to drink tequila like there's no tomorrow, just don't feel as bad when you have that extra glass or shot. The good thing is that you can tell your friends you're actually on a liquid diet (Rim Shot)!
