Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the state of Connecticut has worked hard to keep our citizens powered up and warm by working closely with, regulating and assisting our major utility providers.

Eversource is one of the biggest energy providers to Connecticut and I'm one of their customers. I received an e-mail from them yesterday announcing that their COVID-19 Payment program, which was designed to assist those who have been financially affected throughout the pandemic, has a deadline now for those to enroll, and that date is tomorrow, Thursday, May 20, 2021.

The Eversource payment program is open to all of its customers, both residential and commercial. Think about all of the small businesses that have been shut down over the past year and all of the live entertainment/arts/hospitality/food industry jobs that have disappeared. It's terrible to owe any kind of back payment, but Eversource's program allows protection from disconnection if the customer remains current with their payment terms. Another important benefit of the plan is that Eversource won't charge any fees or interest and give you up to 24 months to pay your past-due balance.

If you're having trouble paying for your utilities here in Connecticut, there are a number of programs here in the state to assist you, in addition to Eversource's COVID-19 Payment program. My mom applied and got assistance from Operation Fuel, a Hartford based organization that provides public assistance for overdue bills. Also, look to UniteCT, the State's hub for emergency rental assistance. Help is out there.

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet's phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.

Even with all of these resources, however, the best cure for food poisoning is preventing it in the first place. To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 30 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.
