Residents of Brewster have been complaining about rusty water coming out of their tap for some time now, so the Town of Brewster is looking to take care of the problem. Look for crews out all day on Wednesday flushing the hydrants around the town.

When tap water becomes rusty or cloudy, the only way to alleviate the problem is to do this kind of hydrant flush. Now how will this effect you:

According to patch.com, village of Brewster officials have told residents that when you get rusty water coming out of your tap, it's not always a health concern, however you should take precaution and not use or drink the water unless you boil it first.

Normally brown, rusty, or orange water can be caused by a number of factors, including water main breaks, local construction work, broken hydrants, even firefighting operations.

What should you do if you experience rusty water? Here are a few tips that may be helpful:

  • The use of hot water should be kept to a minimum. Using the hot water can let some of the cold rusty water seep into your hot water tank.
  • Avoid doing laundry, the rusty water could stain your clothing.
  • Do not run your water till the rust disappears. Running the water that long will waste lot's of water, plus the rust will return if it's already in the water system.
  • After the hydrant flush you could still experience rusty water for up to 4-6 hours, but with more use it will get back to normal fairly quickly.
