It has been almost two months since the July 9th storm that ripped through the Hudson Valley and took down some of our favorite attractions in the Bear Mountain area of Orange County, New York. Hard to believe that we went all summer without being able to go to Bear Mountain State Park or the Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain.

When the July 9th storm hit, it took out multiple area highways and roads. It also apparently did damage to the Trailside Museums and Zoo. Fortunately, the animals were all ok but one update from the Zoo included the mention of water issues being a reason they had to be closed to the public.

The Good news is that as of September 1, 2023, the Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park are back open to the public. As a matter of fact, they held their first public event on September 1. If you don't get a chance to visit over the holiday weekend maybe put next Friday on your calendar.

September 8th will be the second installment of BATS. The Trailside Museums and Zoo invite you to come out to learn more about the world's only flying mammal. You will learn how they fly at night and get to make fun bat crafts. No worries if you are back to school because the event runs from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

If you can't make the BATS event you still need to make a plan to visit the Trailside this fall. It is a wonderful experience and a great way to learn about all the animals that call the Hudson Valley home. Find out more about BATS by emailing Christian Owens at  christian.owens@parks.ny.gov. You will need a reservation for the BATS event.
