Living in Western Connecticut, right on the border with New York, I often hear comparisons between the two states. People frequently debate which state has better—or worse—driving conditions. It seems that regardless of whether you're from New York or Connecticut, there's a shared frustration with the state of the roads.

However, a recent study has shed some light on the issue, revealing that the road quality in one state is significantly better than in the other. According to USA Today, New York received poor ratings, while Connecticut was recognized as having some of the best roads in the nation.

Here are the Top 10 States with the Worst Roads:

  1. Vermont (#50)
  2. Hawaii (#49)
  3. Maine (#48)
  4. Louisiana (#47)
  5. District of Columbia (#46)
  6. Alaska (#45)
  7. California (#44)
  8. New York (#43)
  9. Colorado (#42)
  10. Washington (#41)

In contrast, here are the Top 10 States with the Best Roads:

  1. Missouri (#1)
  2. Nevada (#2)
  3. Nebraska (#3)
  4. North Dakota (#4)
  5. South Dakota (#5)
  6. Connecticut (#6)
  7. North Carolina (#7)
  8. South Carolina (#8)
  9. West Virginia (#9)
  10. Alabama (#10)

As someone who drives in both states, I don’t notice much difference in road quality myself, but what the hell do I know? I'm not USA Today.

The conditions are OK right now but summer just ended, pothole season is right around the corner.

So, how did USA Today come to these conclusions?

The analysis is based on data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) from 2020. The states were ranked according to the percentage of roads categorized as “Good.” The FHWA assesses the condition of each state’s interstate system using the Transportation Performance Management program’s Pavement Condition Measures. This scoring system takes into account factors like rideability (measured by the International Roughness Index), surface distress (via Present Serviceability Rating), and the presence of faults, ruts, and cracks. The FHWA confirmed that these Pavement Condition Measures offer the most comprehensive overview of pavement quality by state. Note that data for Michigan is not available for 2020.
