Kingston, NY Basketball ‘Legend’ Earns Prestigious Recognition from New York State Hall of Fame

A Kingston, New York high school basketball coach is set to be inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Kingston City School District announced on social media this week that Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Steve Garner will be inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.

Over the last 35 years, Coach Garner has collected an incredible record of 447 wins and 283 losses and is tied in 35th place in all-time wins for New York State high school girls basketball coaches.

Of course, numbers don't lie, but the Kingston City School District had high praise for the coach adding to his stats saying "he's not just a coach; he's an area legend."

In a statement released by the Kingston City  School District, they speak with Garner about his career and not only talk about the highs but the lows too. They write:

Garner recalls the path to victory not always being so certain. In his first few seasons, there were some struggles and not many wins. But Garner says he “stayed the course,” focused on consistency, and discovered winning strategies that have served him ever since. His KHS Section IX Teams have since won a remarkable seven AA titles, and are so far the only state team to advance to the Final 4 three times in a row (2007-2009).

Coach Garner is not only a legend on the Kingston basketball court, he's also the marching band director and music teacher. Garner credits the flow of marching band and basketball seasons "to keeping him energized throughout his long career."

Coach Garner, along with 10 other New York State coaches, will be inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in March 2024, an exact date will be announced soon.
