We’ve covered this growing problem extensively on the I-95 Morning Show over the past few years, speaking with lawmakers, mayors, first selectmen, and police officials about the issue.

I’ve also written articles on specific incidents, including the Danbury Street takeover in 2023, the Boston Post Road event the same year, and our in-depth conversation that same year about potential solutions.

Our go-to expert on the matter has been New Fairfield State Rep. Pat Callahan, who’s been actively working on ways to combat the problem. I reached out to him again on Friday (4/18/25) for an update on what is happening in Hartford, this is what Callahan had to say:

"Street takeovers are still occurring in cities and towns in our State.  These takeovers are a serious risk to public safety as bad actors from CT and other states flaunt their lawless behavior in pre-planned events. State and local police are employing numerous tools to stop these events before they take place, and to respond to them when they are happening. In Hartford, we are proposing legislation to strengthen the laws that allow law enforcement and our towns and cities to address this issue.  Bill 1284 was recently voted favorably out of Judiciary Committee, and it contained provisions to allow for municipalities to auction off, or destroy ATVs used in takeovers if not claimed in 30 days.  It would also suspend the license of street takeover participants for 45 days, and after 3rd offense, a permeant suspension.  Hopefully we can get these changes across the finish line this session."

Let’s hope they can shut it down; it does not look like getting cornered in one of these is a blast.
