Connecticut Ranks ‘Meh’ in ‘2025’s Best States For Animals’ Study
A new study that compares all 50 states in animal friendliness has ranked Connecticut right below the middle, but our immediate neighbors did even worse.

SmileHub has just released 2025's Best States For Animals, and Connecticut has landed at #31 out of 50 states. To arrive at their rankings SmileHub compared all 50 states across three key dimensions: Pet Ownership, Animal Protection, and Animal Wellness. Those dimensions were evaluated using 18 relevant metrics like shares of pet owning households, rentals allowing pets, cost of pet food, animal protection laws, share of state land designated for parks, animal charities per capita, veterinarians per 1,000 pets, and ranking of protection laws.
Connecticut ranked at #43 in Pet Ownership, #8 in Animal Protection, and #46 in Animal Wellness. In New England, Connecticut ranked lower than Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, but at least we beat Massachusetts. Colorado, Oregon, and Nebraska ranked as the Top 3 Animal Friendly States for 2025.
From my perspective, I believe that our domestic and farm animals, and wildlife, have it pretty good in Connecticut. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Federal regulations have transformed the polluted Connecticut that I remember in the 1970's and 80's into a transformed, pollutant-reduced landscape much friendlier to animals.
Connecticut has seen increased Moose, bear, and freshwater marine life recently, but our saltwater fishing industry continues to be crushed by regulation and the loss of our lobster and fishing industry. Aquaculture is where we have a huge advantage, and our leaders have tried to help.
