Cops say 63-year-old Paul Kauffman (Wilton, CT) got into it with another guy on March 15 at Deer Valley Resort, accusing him of cutting him off. Things escalated fast—Kauffman allegedly tackled the man while he still had his skis on. The victim, also in his 60s, ended up with some serious injuries, including torn ligaments and a fractured leg. Now Kauffman’s facing a felony aggravated assault charge.
So much to unpack:
1. I used to ski a lot and let me tell you—there’s no good way to brawl on a mountain. Whether you're clipped into your bindings or not, you've got zero leverage. Everyone’s walking like Luke Skywalker on Hoth in ski boots. It's chaos.
2. This is not helping Connecticut's rep. Do I really have to point out how bad it looks that a Wilton, CT guy (allegedly) form-tackles someone over ski space at a luxury Utah resort? Wilton, come get your man.
3. I’m 46 and still have that “throw hands at any moment” energy (not proud of it), but I’m hoping that fades soon. Because the idea of trading punches in my 60s? No thanks. Why are we like this?
4. You know who fights over recreational space? The cast of Point Break.
5. This whole story feels like a rejected 80s ski movie. Like the dude watched Hot Dog (1984) too many times. Actually, scratch that—Better Off Dead (1985) is more the vibe. Cusack owned the '80s.
YES, the headline was a movie reference. Now we can all go back to calming down. Smoke some left-handed cigarettes, I hear they do wonders.
