Police Say Danbury Man Drove Drunk with Infant in Lap

According to a press release from the CT State Police, things got wild on I-84 in Danbury last Friday evening when an off-duty state trooper spotted a tan Chevy Equinox swerving all over the place near exit 8. The vehicle in question didn’t have a rear license plate so the trooper flipped on the lights and sirens, trying to pull the driver over.

According to reports, the SUV just kept creeping along at about 15 mph, first in the right lane, then drifting into the left. When the driver finally slowed down behind stopped traffic, the trooper walked up to the car—only to find the driver holding a one-month-old baby on his lap who was allegedly unrestrained.

The driver, identified later as Dario Marcatoma-Marcatoma, 21, from Danbury, told the trooper he didn’t speak English. So, the trooper put the SUV in park and took the keys to make sure he didn’t take off again. Authorities say it was clear that Dario was impaired. In the end, he didn’t have a license, the car wasn’t registered, and it wasn’t insured.

Extra backup showed up, including a Spanish-speaking officer and EMS, because of the baby. The child’s mother showed up soon after and told troopers Dario had taken the baby from her crib and left the house, while possibly drunk.

When EMS arrived, Dario reportedly still refused to hand over the baby so she could be checked out. That’s when police stepped in. One trooper gently took the baby while others secured Dario, who was arrested and taken in without further drama.

Later at Troop A, he completely Dario allegedly failed sobriety tests, and a chemical test confirmed his blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.

Dario was hit with a long list of charges and held on a $75,000 bond. He’s due in Danbury Superior Court on May 12.
