CCSU and CT State Police Offering Detective Program

The Connecticut State Police and Central Connecticut State University are combining forces to offer a Detective Methodology Program, offering educational opportunities for state and municipal police detectives.

Currently, police detectives must seek out training offerings through various institutions across the country, according to a joint press release from the University and the State Police. CCSU’s new detective programs provide a comprehensive, one-stop option for police detectives to enhance their knowledge and skills that are tailored to the needs of detectives in Connecticut and New England.

The certificate programs also are designed to facilitate further degree completion of both the bachelor’s or master’s degree level. Credits earned through the certificate program can be applied toward completion of either a B.A. in Criminology or a M.S. in Criminal Justice. Additionally, detectives can earn up to 12 credits from prior police academy training towards a B.A. in Criminology.

The Basic Detective Certification will be offered online through CCSU’s Continuing Education and Institute for the Study of Crime and Justice starting this summer. It is Endorsed by the CT State Police Major Crime Methodology Program Advisory Board. The course requires demonstration of a basic understanding of the fundamentals of investigation and evidence gathering.

The Graduate and Undergraduate Certificate programs will offer topics including Topics include Death Investigations, Expectation of Privacy, Financial Crimes, Interview and Interrogation, Sexual Assault Investigations, and Police-Involved Shootings.

The courses will be taught by leading subject matter experts, and there will be the opportunity to apply credits toward completion of a B.A. in Criminology or M.S. in Criminal Justice.
