CT Town Named Best in New England to Retire, Do You Agree?

I'm 44 years old and I have friends who are already doing diligent research trying to figure out where they want to live when they call it a career. This is the carrot on the stick, the sunshine on the horizon that we are all chasing so you don't want to get it wrong.

Thankfully, there are plenty of resources out there that can help you make your decision. There are digital magazines that do in-depth reporting on the best and worst places to retire.

World Atlas recently put out one of these reports, identifying the some of the best small towns to retire in New England. When all was said and done, they did make a selection out of the Nutmeg State.

So where was it? Darien? Greenwich, Mystic? NOPE

It was New London, Connecticut. World Atlas had this to say about their findings:

"New London is a diverse community that values learning from one another and sharing experiences. The Garde Arts Center, a historic movie palace, stands as one of the town's signature attractions. Despite a median age of about 32 years, which might seem young, interactions with younger generations have been shown to provide seniors with a sense of purpose and enhance their well-being and quality of life. New London is also remarkably affordable, with homes fetching a median price of $235,000 according to January 2024 data from Redfin."

I happen to love New London but I have a few problems with this:

1. Cost: I did a report in March of 2023, sharing the results of a study from Seniorly News who said Connecticut is the 3rd Most Expensive retirement state in the country.

2. Crime: Movoto says New London is the 4th most dangerous place in Connecticut. Neighborhood Scout says: "Relative to Connecticut, New London has a crime rate that is higher than 84% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes."

Back to the PRO column, I believe Ocean Beach Park is the best beach in the State of Connecticut, the town's maritime history is unrivaled and the art scene is pretty kick ass.

CT Town Buys $85 Million Estate and Now It's Open to the Public

Darien unveiled the Great Island estate, which it acquired for $85 million, to the public for the first time. This 63-acre site was purchased by the town last May and was made accessible to visitors on March 1st. Originally established as a summer retreat by billionaire William Ziegler in the early 1900s, the estate now permits passive recreation only. Visitors are asked to refrain from bringing bicycles or pets, and walking is restricted to designated paths.

4 Connecticut Based Department Stores That Are No More

I certainly remember shopping at three of the stores on this list and it transports me back to my youth and that makes it a find memory. These 4 stores were not only wildly popular in their day but they had their national headquarters right here in the Nutmeg State.
