It's one of those events that Hudson Valley residents will never forget.

On Friday, April 5th, 2024 at 10:23 am the ground started to shake and had many New Yorkers questioning their sanity asking themselves "Was that just an earthquake?" After a few minutes, it was confirmed. We did indeed just experience an earthquake.

April 5th Earthquake Confirmed with NJ Epicenter

United States Geological Survey reports that a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook with a Tewksbury, New Jersey epicenter. The rumble was felt from Maryland, through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Thankfully, no one was injured during the shake-up, but social media had a field day with it and one business even started selling "I Survived The NYC Earthquake 2024" t-shirts before the sun had set.

You may want to grab one of those shirts, it looks as though this earthquake is a bit more historic than we realize.

4th Largest Earthquake Felt in New York City History

So how strong was the latest New York earthquake? Strong enough to make the history books, at least according to the team at NBC News in New York.

On the NBC website, they asked "Where does Friday's earthquake rank in New York City history?" They explain that with the information they gathered from USGS  "42 million people as far as 200 miles from the epicenter may have felt shaking."

The April 5th,2024 earthquake was the 4th strongest in NY history:

2. December 19th, 1737: 5.2 Greater NYC Area
3. November 30th, 1783: 4.9 N. Central New Jersey
4. April 5th, 2024: 4.8 Tewksbury, NY
5. September 8th, 1848: 4.4 Greater NYC Area
