Over 450 Cars Line Up for Food at Bethel’s Walnut Hill Church

Every Wednesday, Walnut Hill Community Church distributes food to Bethel residents in need, and that need is great.

According to an article on ctinsider.com, this past Wednesday was the eighth Wednesday in-a-row that Walnut Hill has given out food as cars lined up in the church's parking lot. I reached out to the church's food pantry coordinator, Lori Turco, who told me,

The need for the Mobile Food Pantry in the greater Danbury area has exploded!! Last night we served 503 families with 5 to 6 bags of groceries.

 

The bags of groceries were filled with fresh produce, homemade soup, pasta sauce, eggs, dairy, bread, and the list goes on. The Mobile Food Pantry was established over two years ago on the 4th Wednesday of every month in conjunction with the Connecticut Food Bank but in late March, Walnut Hill was asked if they could handle weekly food distributions to greater Danbury families in need.

During that time we saw 175-200 families come through. Once the COVID-19 virus hit our area, many food pantries had to close due to lack of volunteers or food contributions.

 

Walnut Hill's Mobile Food Pantry was able to rise to the challenge of taking on weekly food distributions because of the sheer numbers of volunteers who graciously stepped forward.  

This Mobile Food Pantry has been made possible with the support of Walnut Hill Community Church along with local businesses and personal donations. This has been an amazing community effort!!

The next food pantry will take place on Wednesday, May 20 at 5:30 pm in the church's parking lot at 156 Walnut Hill Road in Bethel.
