New Milford Horror Film Candlewood Is One Step Closer to an Open

On the Monday (6/5/23) edition of the I-95 Morning Show, Large Dave and I were discussing a guest we had on the show last week, a film director from Pennsylvania.

As passionate film consumers we were remarking how interesting it is to get a behind the scenes look at the process of making movies. This prompted Dave to ask me what is going on with the 'Candlewood" project?

The 'Candlewood' movie is a film that was shot in New Milford, CT and has had local residents excited since Day 1. Dave thought I may have an update since I've been in contact with the filmmakers but I didn't have anything tangible to offer. However, word got back to the movie's Director Myke "Foo" Furhman who lives in the local area and he texted me.

We setup a last minute interview with Furhman to update our listeners on the progress of the movie.

Where are we in the process for the Candlewood movie?

"Editing is an art unto itself and we're currently in the post production process. We're actually pretty far along on the picture edit. I just watched the new cut last night and was able to give some new notes and we're getting really close to this thing being ironed out. And then, after you make the picture you cut the audio, you do a bunch of color grading, those are both critical in the genre that we're working in and then put some music to it and we have a movie. So, I'm hopeful that we have the movie by the fall that we can do something locally with and as far as a more widespread release that comes down the road, they usually book those pretty far out. But obviously we're going to premiere it in New Milford at the Bank Street Theater and we're going to let everyone around Candlewood see it first. So hopefully you guys don't have to wait too much longer because I know you've been sweating it out for awhile, just like I have."

How does the distribution work in the film world? Are you constantly in meetings trying to get this into as many theaters as possible?

"It all depends. You need to have the screener, you need to have the full movie done before people will really buy it. There are two approaches, you make the movie and sell it or you work with a studio and they produce it and take care of the distribution as well. Obviously as an indie movie we're doing the former so once the movie is done we'll have a sales agent take it around, we'll also do all the film festivals that is a huge way you can sell a movie, there are markets there, legit markets for people to buy movies."

Are you already working on the sequel to 'Candlewood?'

"We're not actively in any sort of pre-production. Before you even start working on the movie you've got to write the movie and develop it into something. So we're in the very early stages of that but we do have an amazing, what's called a treatment which is essentially the movie written out in 30 some odd pages. So, that is what happens before the screenplay. The story is great it just needs to be fleshed out and keep moving forward, yeah the plan is to make four or five movies locally as part of this greater franchise. The wheels are I don't know, I don't know how trains work but they're doing something with the wheels but they're not even close to pulling out of the station."

What is the question you get asked most often?

"When is it coming out? When can I see it? I want to see this thing. I was at New Milford Goat Days two some odd weeks ago and a dozen people who I didn't even know asked me. I was like that's kind of cool but at the same time I wish my answer was as cool as people coming up to me out of the blue."

The process never seems to sleep for Furhman, as we were talking with him he was on the set of another film. He told us he'd already been working for three hours that morning on a project called "Reentry" that was shooting in Guilford, CT. Myke said the movie is a romantic drama set in a science fiction world but could not comment on the actors in the movie. He did hint that we've "most certainly heard of them and the TV shows that they were starring in."

This past weekend’s (6/4/22) Barnum Festival in Monroe, CT was a success by anyone’s measure. It was a place to go see classic cars of all kinds, have some food and see live music. In that sea of automobile madness was a terrifying thing. There was a vehicle with a recognizable and chilling theme, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Truck. I spoke to the truck's owner Sam Gentile from New Milford, to find out how this came together, and why.

"Candlewood" is a horror film that just finished filming in New Milford, CT. This is how the filmmakers described the project on their Indiegogo:

"Candlewood is the first movie of three in the psychological/horror feature film franchise. A blended family moves from the city to a small town in Connecticut, where a local urban legend adds chaos and terror to an already fragile family dynamic. The staunch patriarch, who desperately wants his family to not see him as a failure but as the father that did everything, he could to keep his family together through difficult times. Candlewood follows a family leaving New York City for a simpler life in the country town of New Milford, CT. The haunting and mysterious true stories of missing hikers near a popular state park, Lover's Leap, coupled with the town of Jerusalem sitting at the bottom of Candlewood Lake gives credibility to our narrative. We bring to life the struggle of good vs evil and what happens when lifelong, outdated traditions are challenged."

A while back I got in touch with the folks behind the movie, invited them on the I-95 Morning Show with Ethan, Lou and Dave and talked about the film, and shooting in New Milford. We spoke with Director Myke Furhman and Writer/Executive Producer Victoria Flores-Argue. During that discussion, I demanded to be in the movie, telling the duo that I have some experience acting on TV shows that never actually made it onto TV. Against all odds, they did invite me to participate and I visited the set on October 20th to shoot a scene that is important. I was extremely nervous and I had zero idea of what I was in for. Below are some insider moments from my day on-set and from others.
