My Go-To Restaurants Have Disappeared In Waterbury, Southbury, and Oakville
It's been a rough summer, I've lost 4 old friends over the past couple of months. Not to crime, unless you consider the price of doing business in Connecticut a criminal offense. Inflation is killing our small businesses, restaurants and diners. Four of my former local favorite restaurants bit the dust during the summer of 2022.
Two weeks ago, Woodbury Diner announced their permanent closure via a heartwarming post via social media. They eloquently thanked everyone in the community, employees, and generations of customers. Woodbury Diner prices were very reasonable, we always had extra money to blow at New Morning.
I was surprised to see that Ray's Place at the corner of Main St and Davis in Oakville is now called Island Rootz. I really enjoyed meeting the Krupa brothers while they made their pierogi in Ray's kitchen. Ray's grinders were amazing, I was really surprised by the change.
Sweet Bella has gone away in Town Plot Waterbury too. Don't worry though, it's just a rebranding: Same owners, same sandwiches, they have changed the name, and added quite a few menu items though.
The last one on my former go-to list that is now no more is Mad Greek Pizza in Southbury. When I couldn't get to Spartans in Waterbury, Mad Greek made a great gyro. I'll eat a block of feta in your memory tonight Mad Greek.
We're the only ones that can stop this from happening. It's more important than ever to keep your money directed locally. Thank you for keeping me happy Woodbury Diner, Mad Greek, and Ray's Place. I'll see you soon on Bradley Ave rebranded Sweet Bella.
