It’s Cold, But Nowhere Near the Record Low Temp in Connecticut
We're hearty New Englanders, it's not the first time Connecticut has experienced sub-zero temperatures, right? Well grab a warm blanket and Long Johns, I'll fill you in on the coldest temperature ever recorded in our state.
It was -9 degrees on my ride into work this morning at 4am, and it's warmed up to 8 above as I'm writing this at 10am. Governor Lamont has activated the Severe Weather Protocol for Connecticut through this Friday, January 24. Today was the worst of it, with temperatures in the Northwest corner of the state dropping below zero. In 2023, a record low temperature of -9, same as I had this morning, was set in February at Bradley International Airport. This morning's temperature was ridiculous, but it was still 20+ degrees away from the coldest temp ever recorded in our state.
According to wikipedia.com, the coldest recorded temperature it's ever dropped down to in Connecticut was -32F, and it's happened twice. According to Hamlethub.com, the coldest temp ever happened in Falls Village, not Norfolk. Did HamletHun.com do the better research? Who's to say? The first -32F that was recorded happened on February 16, 1943 in Norfolk, and that is one of the reasons why some call Norfolk 'The Icebox of Connecticut'. Other reasons include the amount of snow and cool summers, but hey, they were the first to claim it. The other -32F recorded in Connecticut happened 64 years ago today, January 22, 1961 in Coventry.
The biggest threat to any of us in below freezing temperatures is hypothermia, this weather can take your life very quickly if you go outside unprepared.
