A: It is best to apply traffic paint when the temperature is above forty degrees. The warmer summer months are usually the best time to maintain your lot.

Q: How will I know when it is time to rip up the old driveway as opposed to re-paving?

A: If the base of the driveway is very weak, chances are it’s time to replace it. Signs of a weak base include soft or bumpy areas. If the area is very old (15-20 years or more), it may need to be replaced. Don’t pave over a weak base because the new driveway surface will only last about a year.

Q: What causes potholes?

A: Potholes form because asphalt cracks over time from heat and the stress of traffic. Cracks let water seep into the base, then freezes and expands with the weather. Because of these contractions, gravel and dirt are pushed out, leaving a hole.

Q: What is asphalt? Is it a petroleum based product?

A: Asphalt is crude oil mixed with sand and gravel, and heated to 350 deg.

Q: What is the difference between the binder layer and the top layer?

A: The difference is primarily in the stone size: Binder is larger stone (about the size of pennies). Top layer is about the size of pencil erasers. Binder is used because it settles less (for new homes and etc).


A: This is a sensitive issue, especially where parking is limited and the property owner is trying to accommodate more cars than the parking lot is designed for.
