Danbury Man Arrested After Allegedly Striking Construction Worker on I-95
Troopers from the Connecticut State Police - Troop E - Montville have just announced that they have arrested a 46-year-old man from Danbury after he allegedly hit a construction worker on I-95 in North Stonington, Connecticut, and subsequently fled the scene.
The incident occurred yesterday, September 10, 2024, at 6:32PM on I-95 Northbound between exits 91-92 in North Stonington. According to the report, Troopers assigned to Troop E received calls that a construction worker had been struck by a vehicle in a restricted construction zone. Investigating troopers learned that a GMC Sierra pickup truck had been traveling in the left lane on the highway, which had been shut down for the construction project, and had struck one of the construction workers on scene, causing minor injuries. The driver then fled the scene prior to the arrival of responding officers.
According to witnesses, the GMC continued northbound on I-95, but Connecticut State Police caught up to it in the area of the Connecticut/Rhode Island border. The GMC was eventually stopped in Rhode Island by the Rhode Island State Police.
Rhode Island State Police Troopers launched their own investigation, which determined that the operator of the GMC, identified as Julio Macancela, 46, of Sheridan Street in Danbury, had been operating under the influence, and taken into custody.
Investigators from the Connecticut State Police have completed an application for an arrest warrant for Evading and Reckless Driving prior to the collision that occurred in Connecticut and have submitted it to the court for review. No update was provided on Macancela's current whereabouts.
