Could Highway Tunnels Be Coming to Connecticut?

I've driven through Connecticut in backed up, bumper to bumper traffic more times than I can count. I'm not sure this project won't hurt more than it helps, though.

I don't know about you, but underground tunnels that I have to drive through give me the heebie-jeebies. I hate the idea of breaking down inside there. Not sure how many other people will voice concerns, opposition, or even address the "heebie-jeebie factor," but talk is on about a major change in commuting through Connecticut's capital.

According to courant.com, things may be going beneath the surface in Hartford. A new bill is being considered by the state Legislature looking to move Interstates 91 and 84 running through downtown Hartford underground.

Congressman John Larson recently called for an underground tunnel to be built that would replace the frequently bottle necked and old highway system that runs through and above Hartford. He did say that the massive project could take 10 to 20 years to complete and cost billions of dollars.

I seem to recall Massachusetts thinking that the "Big Dig" was going to run smoothly. I'm hyperventilating already over this one.

And speaking of our interstates, newstimes.com is reporting that the issue of proposed highway tolls is on the agenda today during a public hearing at the capital. I'll keep my eye on that one for you.
