It's always sad to see an iconic venue close its doors.

Some buildings should remain part of the fabric of the state you live in. For me, the Bijou Theatre in Bridgeport makes that list.

Bridgeport's Bijou Theater has some fantastic history dating back to the late 1800's and early 1900's.The Bijou opened as a movie house in 1909 and Cinematreasures.org says the Bijou was supposed to be an opera house, but it wound up opening as a movie theatre.

Sadly, according to CTPost.com, Bridgeport's Bijou Theater is closing for good this week. Christine Brown, the president of the non-profit group that runs the Bijou told CTPost

It really is a financial decision. We’re really, really proud of what we’ve accomplished but the economics have made it impossible for us to keep going

Hopefully, all is not lost for the building. Downtown Bridgeport developer Phil Kuchma had this to say to CTPost

That is the oldest building in the United States built as a movie house still operating as a movie house. As long as I have anything to do with that building it’s going to stay a movie house. There’s no question about that. Whatever sacrifices or hard work that takes, it’s going to happen

I've got my fingers crossed that they figure out something perfect for the historic Bijou.
