From dinosaurs to macaroni and cheese, one of Orange County's best towns, Monroe is full of history and more!
If you think about it for a second, we are really lucky to live in an area like the Hudson Valley, right? We have so many small hometowns that have so much to offer. One of those small towns, located in Orange County is the town of Monroe. If you've never been to Monroe before let us share with you a little info about one of our favorite hometowns in the Hudson Valley!
Monore is Named After A President
I won't take credit for actually knowing that the Town of Monroe is named after former president James Monroe, that credit will go to Linda who texted in, "Monroe New York is named after the 5th president of the United States James Monroe...I'm a history teacher...LOL!"
Velveeta Cheese was Born in Monroe
If you've ever enjoyed the "goodness" known as Velveeta cheese, you might not know that it was actually born in Monroe. Carrie let us know that back in the early 1900s Velveeta was invented by Emil Frey of the Monroe Cheese Company located in Monroe. For 4 years the popular cheese company made Velveeta in Monroe until it was sold to Kraft foods in 1927. She mentioned that there is a sign in front of the building where the cheese was invented, "it's near the pond" she said. Not sure where the sign is exactly, but if you live in the Monroe area and can tell us where, please send us a message through the Wolf country app.
"Harry the Mastadon" Lives in Monroe
"Harry" is one of only three complete mastodon specimens in the world and he calls Museum Village home in the town of Monroe. Harry was given his name after his bones were found a few miles down the road in HArriaman back in 1952 according to the Orange County Mineral Society. Museum Village located at 1010 State Route 17M, in Monroe, offers tours on most weekends and offer special events throughout the year. Get more information here.
Most towns have at least one or two great places for good food but as far as we can tell there is one MUST-visit restaurant in Monroe. The Captain's Table was the one restaurant that was suggested to us more than any other!! Celebrating 50 years of serving Orange County, the Captain's Table, located at 547 NY-17M, Monroe, NY offers guests some of the Hudson Valley's best seafood, steaks, and more. Plus they offer live entertainment on certain dates. Get more information on the Captian's Table here.
