WestConn Joins Other Connecticut Universities and Cancels Winter Sports
I'm sure this comes as no surprise to anyone, because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, WestConn has decided to cancel all their winter sports.
This will affect the men's and woman's basketball program, swimming, and diving teams.
Here's what the Director of Athletics, Lori R. Mazza, had to say through a press release to newstimes.com:
Our winter student athletes are being asked to make additional sacrifices for the health and safety of themselves and the community that surrounds them. This difficult decision was not made in haste because we know it will cause such disappointment for our athletes, but I also know the resilience of each and every one of our student athletes and look forward to the day when WestConn athletics is back in its truest form.
With the cancelation of winter sports, WestConn joins other Connecticut universities like Post, Yale, Albertus Magnus, Connecticut College, Mitchell, Trinity, University of St. Joseph and Wesleyan who have all already canceled their winter sports seasons.
Now, just because the winter sports season has been canceled, that doesn't mean the student athletes don't have a way to stay in shape. The school has announced that they can participate in training and other sport related activities when the semester break is over and they return in January.
Right now, there has been no decision made on the status of any of the spring sports, however the university is not ruling out the possibility of fall and winter sports playing modified schedules during the spring.
