Upstate New York County Hiring Fired Prison Guards

County officials in Upstate New York have issued a statement stating that it's open to hiring New York correction officers who were fired during the statewide strike in February and March.

Earlier this month we told you that New York Governor Kathy Hochul had signed an executive order that will prohibit all prison guards who participated in the recent strike from working for New York State ever again. At the time, Gov Hochul made it clear that her office would not allow any of the state-employed prison guards who participated in the strike from any future form of state employment.

Jobs for Fired New York Correction Officers

According to WTEN, Saratoga County officials have announced that they are open to hiring any of the correction officers who were fired because of the strike. The county issued a joint statement on Friday explaining the county's frustration with the state’s decision to fire thousands of corrections officers. Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chairman Phil Barrett, Sheriff Michael Zurlo, and Undersheriff Jeff Brown all agreed that the prison guard shortage is a burden on every county across New York saying,

"We fully support officers who had serious concerns that were unaddressed by the state for their own personal safety initiated by the Governor signing the HALT Act and encourage these individuals to apply for employment in Saratoga County. We believe the availability of seasoned officers added to our professional staff will enhance our overall effectiveness, particularly during this challenging situation our Sheriff’s Offices is experiencing."

In firing almost 2000 guards many counties are now forced to relocate resources and handle increased responsibilities and that comes at a cost for many counites including Saratoga County.

Currently, Saratoga County has six open correction officer positions.
