About 7,500 Danbury residents receive food stamps according to statistics issued by the state. Trump has proposed a food delivery program that would cut benefits provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in half and replace them with food decided on by the United States Government. The program is being described as a Blue Apron for Low Income Families.

For families that qualify for $90 or more in food stamps per month, CNBC.com reports that "America's Harvest Box" may soon replace some of the cash. SNAP recipients would receive a package of food grown and produced in the United States representing about half of the benefits they are currently receiving.

While the White House is touting this as the best thing since sliced bread, others feel that this program would further reduce benefits to those who need them the most.

Perhaps this proposal would save money in one account, but based on our decades of experience in the program, it would increase costs in other areas that would negate any savings. Retailers are looking to the administration to reduce red tape and regulations, not increase them with proposals such as this one."  Jennifer Hatcher - Food Marketing Institute Chief Public Policy Officer
