I enjoy eating fish & chips year round, not just on Fridays during Lent. This is my 'Big Game' -  the Roman Catholic Super Bowl. 40 glorious days where most restaurants offer fish & chips specials every Friday. I've ordered fish & chips at hundreds of restaurants around Connecticut over the decades, but most recently, these are the three that served up the best.

If you're wondering why so many restaurants offer fish and chips during February and March every year, us Catholics have to abstain from eating meat on Friday during Lent-  the religious observation commemorating the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert while enduring temptations from Satan. in 2024, that means no bacon, no burgers, no ham, but fish? Yeah, it's cool.

Overall, I'm becoming more obsessed with The White Horse in New Preston every day, but I have to say in this case that the Superior Fish and Chips that they serve every day is the most incredible dish that I've had recently. Everything on the menu at White horse has an air of decadence about it, and the sexy, lightly-battered golden brown pieces of cod that came out with my precious malt vinegar and tartar sauce were perfect. The fires? Oh my God. White Horse will also substitute two Massachusetts Yellowtail Sole filets for a $3 upcharge, but the cod was perfect.

Tony & Sons Seafood on Main Street in Oakville has been my go-to for decades for fish & chips, they do an incredible fish fry year round on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, not just during Lent. But, during Lent, the 2 for $20 fish & chips meals come out on special Fridays. Consistently great, every time.

My third choice for best fish & chips I've had recently is a wild card. Verdi at Western Hills Golf Course in Waterbury. Although most every time I step into a restaurant owned by a D'Amelio in Waterbury I feel compelled to order one of their traditional Italian dishes, I saw fish & chips on Verdi's menu, it was perfect. The beer batter was the key.
