The Ridiculous Reason Why The Empire State Building Was Lit Up Green This Weekend
Why Was The Empire State Building Lit Up Green This Weekend?
The Empire State building was shining a vibrant green back on Sunday, January 26th, 2025 and the reason behind it has New Yorkers a little upset.
According to The Empire State Building's social media accounts it was to celebrate The Philadelphia Eagles NFC Championship win. The Eagles are one of the main rivals for the New York Giants, so this hurt NY football fans just a smidge.
The Department of Buildings in NYC was not pleased. They wrote on X:
The Empire State Building then clarified that they would change the colors after the AFC Championship game.
And they did:
Mid-Hudson Bridge Lights Up for Big Blue
New York football fans had a tough go at it this season. The New York Giants and New York Jets were awful. There's no other way around it.
They just weren't good. And they play in New Jersey so can we really call them NY football teams. I digress.
However, New York's only real team the Buffalo Bills held it down for us until their loss in the AFC Championship game vs The Kansas City Chiefs.
It was a different story back in the 2022-2023 season, when the New York Giants made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Sadly they lost to The Eagles and wouldn't you know it...The Empire State Building lit up green for them too!
But then rumors swirled that the local Mid-Hudson Bridge was taking a stance and lit up blue and red for the New York Football Giants.
Lets hope next season the Giants, Jets or Bills give us a reason to light it up again!
Does The Empire State Building Every Go Dark?
Has the Empire State Building ever gone dark? Usually it's lit up for the holidays, or special events (like football games!).
And yes, it does go dark on certain occasions. The Marmara Park Avenue website explains:
Some days, the lights are turned off, and the Empire State Building remains dark. This is typically done to show solidarity and support for a tragedy. You will never see a company logo illuminated on the building.
