The Ground Round is Coming Back, But Not to Connecticut (Yet)
How many years have you been praying that someone out there would realize the errors of their ways and resurrect your favorite restaurant chain? For years there's been pleas for anyone to bring back a Ground Round Restaurant, and it's finally happening.
Here's the good news: A brand new Ground Round Restaurant is already under construction at 225 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. The restaurant is projected to open for business by the end of January 2025, according to Masslive.com. The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts Ground Round would be the first to be resurrected on the East coast. At the moment, the owners of the Ground Round concept are operating four Ground Round restaurants in North Dakota and Ohio according to Masslive.com, but a quick search of mygroundround.com only lists two in Bismark and Minot. This gives me hope, first Shrewsbury, and then back to Connecticut? It's tangible now.
What's on the menu at the two that are open in North Dakota? Street Tacos, wings, egg rolls and nachos for apps, 9 burger varieties, steak, chicken, and seafood entrees, pasta, and a special Tex-Mex menu. The free popcorn is not mentioned anywhere.
What happened to Ground Round Restaurants? Competition from Applebee's, Chili's, TGI Friday's, Cheesecake Factory and everyone else who adopted the standard set by Ground Round's parent company and predecessor- Howard Johnson's. Here's video I found on YouTube about the rise and fall of Ground Round -
Shrewsbury, Massachusetts is just to the Northeast of Worcester, it's a very easy trip from I-84 to the Mass Pike to 290. February 2025 road trip?
