Connecticut’s DRS Says Latest Tax Scammers Pose as Company Officers

It's been drilled into us over and over about IRS phone scams. Now the scammers are hitting workplaces.

We've been told numerous times that the Internal Revenue Service will not make threatening phone calls to you. People still fall for that scam, even though it seems less and less. But this new scam involves human resource and payroll departments in companies and that's really scary.

In a report from nbcconnecticut.com scammers are going in for the big kill. The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services and the Internal Revenue Service have issued warnings about a W-2 scam via email. Popping up for the first time during last year's tax season, the scam takes a corporate officer's name and asks for W-2 forms.

In the DRS press release, Commissioner Kevin Sullivan had this to say:

No matter how official an email requesting W-2 or Social Security numbers may look, do not respond without verifying it is legitimate. Don’t get scammed

If you work in one of these departments, or are just concerned in general, there are tips about what to look out for in the media release at ct.gov

Department of Revenue Services Commissioner Kevin Sullivan is advising people that they can contact DRS at (860) 297-5962 or outside the Hartford calling areas at (800) 382-9463 to report an email scam.
