
Thousands of Drivers Ticketed in New York
The New York State Police issued a massive number of tickets over the Memorial Day weekend.
If you spent any time driving over the Memorial Day weekend and noticed a heavier-than-normal police presence on New York roads, you weren't alone. The New York State Police and numerous law enforcement agencies were out in full force over the holiday weekend, issuing thousands of tickets.
New York State Police Issue Thousands of Tickets
Every year, as Memorial Day approaches, the New York State Police (NYSP) let drivers know that they are planning a statewide crackdown on drivers who break the law. The Memorial Day Weekend enforcement kicked off on Friday, May 23, 2025, and ran through Monday, May 26, 2025, with staggering results. This year, the NYSP focused on DWI, speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt violations, and drivers not adhering to the Move Over Law.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the statewide crackdown on May 23rd, informing drivers that they should expect to see an increased number of sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, as well as more State Police issuing tickets to drivers who are breaking the law.
"Public safety is my top priority and my Administration is committed to ensuring travelers are safe on our roadways this holiday weekend,” Governor Hochul said. “Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to summer and a busy travel season - I urge all motorists to drive responsibly and if you are celebrating, make a plan to get yourself or your guests home safely. New York State has zero tolerance for impaired driving."
New York State Police Issue Thousands of Tickets
This year, the holiday weekend crackdown resulted in the NYSP issuing a total of 12,062 tickets statewide, according to a press release. In the Hudson Valley region, Troopers issued 2486 tickets for various infractions, including Move Over Law, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations. They also issued 791 tickets for speeding and arrested 75 people for DWI. This year's campaign resulted in troopers issuing 1,113 more tickets than last year.
During last year’s Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign, which ran from Friday, May 24, 2024, through Monday, May 27, 2024, the State Police issued 10,949 total tickets.
