Normally around mid-June, law enforcement groups from New Milford, Brookfield, Danbury, and Bethel would all come together for the Connecticut Special Olympics Torch run. Unfortunately, that will not happen this year.

The announcement was made by the New Milford Police Department that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's torch run would not take place.

Here's the official announcement and post from the New Milford Police Departments Facebook page:

In a letter posted on the Connecticut Special Olympics Website, the organization announced the canceling of this years summer games as well.

Because the health and well-being of our athletes, volunteers, family members and friends is paramount, we've made the very difficult decision to cancel our Summer Games, scheduled to take place in Fairfield County, June 12th - 14th. The challenges and uncertainty that the coronavirus (COVID-19) has presented make it impossible to organize, plan and proceed, as well as partner with those in the community we rely on to make the event possible.

Thank you for your understanding. Please know how much we appreciate your continued support and confidence in us to provide life-changing programs and, above all, stay safe and well.

Here's a look at our local area's bravest taking part in last year's Torch Run as they ran past our radio station:
