According to an article in the Newstimes and dispatch at Water Witch Hose Co. 2 in New Milford, that's what happened when a New Milford woman on Long Mountain Road happened to gaze out her window. What she saw was what she called "fire in the woods" around 1AM early Wednesday morning.
Engine 19 was dispatched and at the scene of the fire on Long Mountain Rd within 5 minutes. Firefighters immediately noticed a live power line burning in the road just north of North Valley Rd. According to Water Witch Hose Company No. 2, "the fire burned through the roadway for an hour before utility crews from Eversource shut down power".
Meanwhile, Long Mountain Road had to be blocked off as firefighters waited on Eversource to de-energize the power lines. Can someone tell me why it took one hour for Eversource to shut down the power?
Engine 19 then had to put out a brush fire and hose down glowing hot asphalt using 1,000 gallons of water according to the fire company, which stated never to underestimate a downed power line because they can be extraordinarily dangerous. Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 posted on their Facebook Page:
We cannot stress enough that all downed wires should be respected as live until rehung by Eversource.
