Police: Brookfield Man Faces Charges Following Fatal Crash

In an update to a story that is truly tragic for all involved, a local man has been arrested following a crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

According to the Brookfield Police Department, 51-year-old Gary Elwell of Brookfield turned himself in on February 4, 2020 upon learning that a warrant had been issued for his arrest, stemming from an incident that occurred in the fall of last year.

Back on Friday, October 4, 2019, 76-year-old Linda Warner, also of Brookfield, had been either walking or jogging when she was struck by a Ford SUV in the area of 279 Candlewood Lake Road.

Gary Ellwell happened to be the driver of the SUV, and police say he immediately dialed 9-1-1 at the time and remained on the scene to be interviewed by the responding officers.

Warner was transported to Danbury Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Elwell did not suffer any injuries and police say there were no other passengers in the vehicle.

The Brookfield man was processed and formally charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, use of a hand held mobile device while operating a motor vehicle, failure to exercise due caution to avoid colliding with a pedestrian and failure to use the proper lane. He was released on a promise to appear in court on March 10.
