Police: Arrest Made in 1986 Murder and Sexual Assault of Norwalk Girl

Police have made an arrest in association with the murder and sexual assault of an 11-year-old Norwalk, CT girl that took place nearly 33 years ago.

According to the Norwalk Police Department, Marc J. Karun (pictured above) of Stetson, ME was arrested by members of the Maine State Police Major Crime Unit on Wednesday, June 12, at 11:20 AM as he exited his home.

Police say Karun was a fugitive of Justice and was arrested after members of the Norwalk Police Department, Lieutenant Art Weisgerber and Sergeant Alex Tolnay, traveled to Bangor, ME in order to execute a warrant they had obtained regarding the 1986 murder and sexual assault of then 11-year-old Kathleen Flynn.

According to a 2016 report from Norwalk PD's Lieutenant Art Weisgerber, Kathleen Flynn was reported missing by her mother on September 23, 1986, after she didn't make it home from school. At the time, some friends of Kathleen reportedly saw her walking near a familiar path, which she typically traveled along on her way home.

An extensive search of the local area was conducted, which turned up Kathleen Flynn's body more than 100 feet from the aforementioned path. A medical examination determined that she had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death.

As time went on, the case went cold, but was eventually reevaluated with the use of DNA technology.

Karun is currently being held at the Penobscot County Jail while the terms of his extradition are being determined, but the details of what led police to his arrest have not yet been released.

The Norwalk PD also released the following statement from Kathleen Flynn's family:

“We wish to thank the Norwalk Police Department for bringing Kathleen’s murderer to justice. This continues to be a very difficult time for us and we do not wish to make any further comments. We ask the media to please respect our privacy.”
