Pawling’s Appalachian Trail Rail Station Is A Hidden Gem
There are so many little known hiking places in our area, and once in a while, you stumble upon one of them.
My wife and I love to find new places to walk and hike, and we're always on the lookout for spots that we have never been to before.
In the past, we've stumbled upon the 'Stone Church' in Dover Plains, the 'Bird Sanctuary' in Brookfield, 'Saugatuck Falls Natural Area' in Redding, and 'Steep Rock Preserve' in Washington Depot.
Recently, we discovered a real hidden gem in Pawling, the 'Appalachian Trail and Rail Station'.
The station, which, by the way, is the only rail station in the country located on the Appalachian Trail, is part of Metro North's Harlem line and was build in 1990 to serve campers and hikers. The station is temporarily closed now due to the pandemic, but normally, trains only stop there on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.
Right across from the station is a boardwalk that takes you through the Great Swamp right to the next leg of the Appalachian Trail.
Here are some photo's of what I call a hidden gem in Pawling.
