NYC Stage Star from Katonah Talks with Mr Morning and Suzy
On a recent trip to Manhattan, I was able to catch a musical about one of New York’s original tough guys, James Cagney. Actually he just played a tough guy in the movies, but was all about causes that are pertinent to this day. One of his biggest, was advocating for poor and working people as detailed in Cagney the Musical at New York’s Westside Theatre.
Whether you know everything about James Cagney, or nothing at all, you will walk out with a love and admiration for this New Yorker, born and bred on the Lower East Side. He could sing and dance and even did so in a frilly frock before he became famous. The show tightly weaves and stitches together the highlights and low points of his life and career.
In short order you really understand the soul of this man and the times that molded him. You’ll click with lots of the classic, as well as new catchy tunes. Add in colorful, dramatic stage effects for good measure, the upbeat dance numbers, and you’ll love the lift you get from this show.
Cagney’s creator and star Robert Creighton plays James Cagney. Bruce Sabath plays opposite Creighton as the movie mogul, Jack Warner, who gave James Cagney his biggest break in the business. Warner grew into an adversary, as the head of Warner Brothers, the studio that contracted the Cagney.
I was fortunate enough to bump into Bruce after the show. As we talked, I discovered he’s been a resident of Katonah since the turn of the century. Mr. Morning and I decided to get our neighbor in Katonah country on the air to talk about his work on Broadway and more. Give a listen!
