New Milford Police Warn Drivers of Steep Fines as School Buses Roll

Passing a school bus with flashing red lights could cost you a hefty fine.

It's difficult to believe that all motorists aren't aware that when a school bus comes to a stop with their red lights flashing, it means all vehicles must stop until those flashers are off.

An article in the NewsTimes reminds us that New Milford Police will be out patrolling during the first week of school to make sure motorists are obeying the following law:

A driver approaching a school bus must stop their vehicle 10 feet in front of or ten feet behind a school bus when its red lights are flashing.

Failing to obey the law could result in a $470 fine. New Milford Mayor, Pete Bass has also issued a press release on his Facebook page asking parents to talk with their kids about bus safety.

Connecticut State Police has issued a warning stating that "the afternoon hours are especially dangerous for walking children." Over the last 10 years, nearly one-third of child pedestrian fatalities have taken place between 3 and 7 pm.
