New Milford Dive Teams Still Searching for Missing Swimmers in the Housatonic

Loved ones of two missing swimmers have gathered outside the Gaylordsville firehouse.

Dive teams accompanied by other emergency personnel continue to search for two young men from the Bronx, NY, who were last seen off the east bank of the Housatonic River near the Bulls Bridge Power Plant.

Friday morning marked day three of the search where the 21 and 24-year-olds were 'observed going underwater' by family and friends on Wednesday afternoon around 4:50 pm.

According to CT Post, New Milford Mayor, Pete Bass said that the current in that section of the Housatonic River is challenging at best, even for a skilled swimmer. Emergency personnel from New Milford, Sherman, Kent, Bantam, Woodbury, Danbury, and Connecticut State Police were called into action.

Underwater search and rescue teams spent hours in the water looking for the two young men. Mayor Bass has always said that this section of the Housatonic, adjacent to the Bull's Bridge Power Plant, is one of the most dangerous areas because of the current, which also makes it difficult for professional divers.

Last August, a woman from the Bronx drowned in the same area where emergency personnel is currently searching for the two young men. According to Lt. Earl Wheeler of the New Milford Police Department, "the identities of both victims are not being released until search, rescue, or recovery activities are completed."
