New Jersey is Talking Smack About Connecticut Pizza?
The State of Connecticut has rolled out a series of new welcome signs to celebrate all the things that make the Nutmeg State a special place to live. On Wednesday (09/04/24) the office of CT Governor Ned Lamont issued a press release to share the news with state residents.
The press release read in part:
Governor Ned Lamont today unveiled new interstate highway “Welcome to Connecticut” signs that have been erected at seven key entry points near the state’s border, including on I-95 and I-84 entering from New York; on I-91, I-84, and I-395 entering from Massachusetts; and on I-95 and U.S. Route 6 entering from Rhode Island. The signs each showcase a unique aspect of Connecticut’s identity and the opportunities available in the Nutmeg State.
“These new signs are not just markers on our highways, they are a reflection of what makes Connecticut special,” Governor Lamont said. “We want everyone entering our state to immediately feel proud of what we do well here, whether it’s making the nation’s best pizza, world class meals, national championships, or the most complex machines in the world. Each sign is an invitation to experience all that we have to offer as one of the best states to live, work, and play.”
Soon after the presser hit the national media, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy fired an unprovoked shot at Connecticut when he tweeted:
"You’re not even the pizza capital of the tri-state area,"
Northjersey.com reports other X users piled on with one saying: "No potholes were harmed in the making of these signs… or fixed, either." Another post read "Omg what’s next? They claim the Taylor ham egg and cheese?"
On Thursday morning (09/05/24) we spoke with Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves and asked him to respond to the pizza war.
Lou: Then, NJ Governor Phil Murphy comes out and starts taking shots at our Governor, and that is our job to take shots at our Governor. He said we're (CT) not even the pizza capital of the Tri-State area. We can't just let that slide...
Mayor Alves: "Listen, then let’s go; it’s pizza war. New Jersey has good New York-style pizza. Nobody ever says, ‘Hey, I’m going to go get a New Jersey-style pizza.’ I’ve never heard that. The minute they have a New Jersey-style pizza, then I think the Governor can talk. He’s actually a good guy; I’ve met him before, but it’s all in jest. Listen, we’re ready for it. I think New Jersey loves their pizza, but the rest of the country loves our pizza. You should have pride in what you do, but the reality is Connecticut is the pizza capital."
We asked our listeners what they thought about NJ Governor Phil Murphy's comments this morning and these are some of the responses we got:
Buddo: "Jersey is the armpit of the United States It’s like the Bridgeport of ct.."
Ground Pounder: "New Jersey it’s the unwiped butthole of America."
So, I guess it's war.
