Connecticut Airport Submits Permit Applications to Advance in Expansion Plan
Any type of expansion for traveling from Connecticut is great for people like me who love to hop on a plane and see new places. You've heard me talk time and time again about how convenient Tweed Airport in New Haven is and how it's been such a great addition to Connecticut.
The people that live around there may not agree, and I understand that because their type of living completely changes when you're directly next to an airport. I know there has been a constant battle about the airport and the neighboring residences and it seems to continue.

Today, Tweed has announced that they took the next step in the process of expanding the Tweed-New Haven Airport by submitting their wetland permits to the CT DEEP. They went on to say that "these applications outline how critical infrastructure improvements, including a new 80,000-square-foot East Terminal and extended runway, will be paired with robust environmental mitigation, long-term sustainability strategies, and a thoughtful approach to engaging and protecting surrounding communities."

According to their website, this project is to extend the runway to a total length of 6,575 feet. If you've ever flown Avelo Airlines into New Haven, you understand how short the runway is. When people fly it for the first time, I always tell them to be prepared for the landing. They do slam on the breaks because the runway is so short. So this is great news for everyone that flies Avelo.

They are also planning to have a new East Terminal that will be 80,000-square-feet and expand parking for up to 4,000 vehicles. They are hoping that this expansion will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and increased passenger volumes.
Like I said, for me, this is great news. I think it's time they expand. They have been getting increasingly more popular (good for them) and it's time that the tiny airport gets a little bit bigger. I can't wait for even more flight opportunities out of New Haven. I'll be waiting.
