Necco Wafers Coming Back to Greater Danbury Store Shelves
It's one of the oldest candies in the country, and it's making a comeback.
Necco Wafers have been around since 1847, and they are one of the oldest candy brands in existence, but if you were looking to pick some up over the last few years, you were basically out of luck.
The New England company that supplied everyone with those flat multi-colored wafers closed down two years ago, and the candy disappeared from store shelves. Fans of the candy figured they would never get another chance to taste the long lasting old fashioned treat.
That all changed late last week when the word spread that the Spangler Candy Company, which purchased the rights to the candy two years ago, would be putting them back into circulation.
Spangler already produces classic candies like Dum-Dum lollipops, Circus Peanuts, and Sweethearts, which made their return this past Valentines Day, will now be distributing several classic Necco flavors
According to today.com, Kirk Vashaw, the chairman and CEO of Spangler Candy, talked about the classic candies return in an exclusive interview:
We've always admired the brand and how it's woven in with the fabric of our culture. It's neat to be eating a candy that was carried by Civil War soldiers, and taken on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions, and issued to GIs in World War II as a morale booster. It's a piece of our history.
A package of the wafers include a mix of eight different flavors including lemon, lime, orange, clove, cinnamon, wintergreen, licorice, and chocolate.
If your looking for the all-chocolate rolls that had been produced, your out of luck since they will no longer be offered outside of the variety packages. However Vashaw did have some news regarding their new edition chocolate wafers:
There might be a slight difference in taste with the chocolate wafer, though. Connoisseurs may notice a slightly richer taste to the cocoa. It’s the same flavor, but we use a slightly different process. To our palate, it brings out the flavor a bit differently.
Candy is a simple joy in life and it’s a simple reward. People want the same thing they remember as a kid. That’s the beauty of candy — nostalgia.
The candy will be available as soon as this month in Drugstores and pharmacies, and shipments to other stores will start by early July. Look for the same classic packaging that Necco wafers has been famous for.
In case you have never experienced the taste of Necco Wafers, or maybe you were just wondering, here's a look at how they are made.
