A police pursuit led to a man barricading himself inside a house in Clinton, New York.

A tense situation began to unfold on Monday after many residents in the Town of Clinton, NY, reported a massive police presence at a residence in the Dutchess County town.

Police Pursuit in Dutchess County, NY

According to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), it all started Monday evening when police tried to stop a vehicle in Dutchess County for traffic violations, and as they attempted to stop the driver, they began to flee.

Police pursued the driver through Dutchess County until the driver finally stopped the vehicle at a residence off of Route 9G in the Town of Clinton, New York. Police said the driver jumped out of the vehicle at 167 North Creek Road in the Town of Clinton and fled into a house on the property and barricaded himself inside.

Upon arrival, Sheriff Deputies from the patrol division attempted to locate the driver to place in custody and were informed that the suspect had entered a house where there was potential access to firearms. Given that information, deputies requested that the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit, UAS (drone) Unit, Crisis Negotiations Unit, and Detective Bureau respond to the scene to assist.

As the police presence escalated, deputies began talking with the suspect from outside the house to try and convince him to surrender.

Barricaded Individual Surrenders

Thankfully, these talks led the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Zachary Higgins, to peacefully surrender without further incident. Higgins was taken into custody and charged with numerous misdemeanors, including Unlawful Fleeing from A Police Officer, Reckless Driving, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, as well as multiple traffic tickets.

Following the investigation, deputies announced that Higgins had an active bench warrant for felony drug charges out of the Town of Newburgh, NY. He was processed and issued an appearance ticket by the DC Sheriff’s Office and later turned over to the Town of Newburgh Police Department.
