The Putnam County Sheriff's office and federal authorities have been a part of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking and now it's paid off.

According to the Danbury Daily Voice, two men have been taken into custody. Deputy Christopher Irwin, who partners up with his K-9 deputy, Kato, stopped 18-year-old Francisco Sagastume and after searching his vehicle, report that they discovered one kilo of heroin. That same evening, after obtaining a search warrant, sheriff's deputies knocked on the door of 21-year-old Eduardo Paiz-Ortega, where they say they found another kilo of heroin. The estimated street value of the smack is $200,000.

Both suspects were arrested on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree, which means if convicted, Eduardo and Francisco could be going away for a very long time.

Does Putnam County have a plan to battle the sale and use of heroin? You bet they do, thanks to Putnam County Sheriff, Donald Smith and County Court Judge, James Reitz.

Back in April of 2016, the two held a symposium that discussed a new strategy to combat the heroin problem which included a three-point approach:

  1. Education and awareness programs
  2. Strict enforcement of drug laws
  3. Drug treatment programs

According to the website, tapinto.net from April of 2016, Putnam County District Attorney Robert Tendy said:

The strategy now is to try and get the user help and on track to lead a more productive life rather than immediately turn to incarcersation and it's already paying dividends!
