Humans have this funny little need to share stories and visuals with one another — it’s like we’re hardwired to broadcast experiences we just went through. All of that is a fancy way of asking: why do we share snow photos with our neighbors? They were out there too. They saw the frozen chaos with their own eyes. They felt the sting of the wind on their face as they shoveled, just like we did.

Honestly, I don’t have a perfect answer for why we do it. But I do know this: not all snow visuals are created equal. Some people just get lucky—or in this case, unlucky—and end up capturing a scene that makes the rest of us pause and squint.

Take this one, for example. A Connecticut Reddit user going by SueBee shared a wild shot out of Guilford, CT.

I have no idea what was happening in Guilford to create a snow pile like that, but holy cow, as Phil Rizzuto used to say. Either there was some serious blowing and drifting, or these folks were stacking snow from previous storms right in front of the door. Either way, it’s intense.

I’m starting to hate the snow a little, but I can’t help loving the creativity of this photo. I mean, we really aren’t measuring enough things with cans of beer these days. And honestly, after conditions like that, just about everyone deserves a drink when the shoveling is done. Moisturizer is also a must — winter has officially turned all of us into itchy, cranky humans.

Snow may be terrible, but the way people capture it? That’s pure entertainment.
