A Great Dane named Minnie, who lives with her family in North Stonington, has officially been crowned the tallest living female dog in the world. When Minnie stands up straight, she measures a jaw-dropping 3 feet, 2 inches tall at the shoulder, which is enough to land her in the Guinness World Records book.

Minnie joined the Nogacek family as a tiny two-month-old puppy, but it didn’t take long for them to realize she wasn’t going to stay tiny for very long. She grew fast, tipping the scales at around 35 pounds before she even hit her first birthday — a clear sign that this dog was built different.

It wasn’t until Minnie was about two and a half years old that the idea of a world record really started to sink in. The family’s daughter was the first to suggest that Minnie might be something special, height-wise. Still, the Nogaceks decided to play it safe and wait until Minnie was fully grown before making it official.

That moment finally came when Minnie was around three and a half years old — although getting her measured turned out to be a challenge. According to owner Ken Nogacek, convincing Minnie to stand still long enough required a little creativity… and a lot of peanut butter, one of her favorite treats.

The effort paid off. Minnie’s final measurement officially pushed her past the previous female record holder, a Great Dane from Florida, by about an inch. She’s also just shy of the tallest female dog ever recorded and sits one inch below the current tallest living male dog.

Not bad for a puppy who started out fitting in someone’s lap — and now has Connecticut on the global dog map.

My friend Matt Carey bought a Great Dane and for the life of me I could not understand this move. He's the only person I know who gets angrier than me when inconvenienced. Getting a Great Dane is like having a horse living in your house.
