A new roundup from Stacker, using Yelp reviews from September 2025, ranked the top burger restaurant in 50 major U.S. cities. To make the cut, restaurants had to rack up hundreds of customer reviews, making this less about one person's opinion and more about what diners have consistently been saying.

For New Haven, the top spot went to Prime BGR, formerly known as Prime 16, on Temple Street.

Now, anytime someone starts talking about the "best burger" in Connecticut, you know an argument is about to break out. We love debating pizza, lobster rolls, hot dogs, and apparently burgers too. Everyone has their favorite neighborhood spot, and most of us are convinced it's better than everyone else's pick.

Still, earning recognition in a nationwide list is no small accomplishment. Prime BGR has built a reputation for serving creative burgers alongside more traditional options, and according to thousands of Yelp users, it's the place to beat if you're craving a burger in New Haven.

The national list also points out something that's pretty obvious once you start traveling around the country: burgers look a little different depending on where you are. Some regions stick with the classic cheeseburger, while others pile on everything from avocado to pimento cheese or other local favorites. That's part of what makes America's burger scene so much fun.

Whether you agree with Yelp's choice or think your favorite Connecticut burger joint got snubbed, one thing is certain—we're not short on great places to grab a burger. And if you're already planning your next road trip to New Haven, you may want to see if Prime BGR lives up to all the hype.

6 Everyday Connecticut Things That Outsiders Think We’re Totally Making Up

If you live in Connecticut long enough, you forget that the rest of America has no idea what we’re talking about half the time. We drop references to things like “Wethersfield Pizza Wars,” “the Mixmaster,” or “UConn women’s expectations” like they’re universal topics everyone everywhere discusses over coffee. But the moment an out-of-state visits, you remember oh right, none of this is normal. Connecticut is full of quirks that are perfectly reasonable to us and completely baffling to everyone else.
