According to Best & Worst States to Drive in 2026 by WalletHub.com, Connecticut is the second-safest state to drive, and just missed the Top 20 in the rankings coming in at #22. Looking deeper into WalletHub's research, those are the only two things about driving in Connecticut that we should be proud of. As most of us who drive understand already, it's very expensive here.

In order to determine their rankings of which states were better or worse to drive in, WalletHub compared the 50 states across four key dimensions: Cost of Ownership & Maintenance, Traffic & Infrastructure, Safety, and Access to Vehicles & Maintenance. That data was further evaluated using 31 relevant metrics: Average Gas Price, Average Car Insurance Premium, Share of Rush Hour Congestion, Number of Bad Weather Days, Average Commute Time, Quality of Roads and Bridges, Traffic Fatality Rate, Share of Uninsured Drivers, Auto Repair Shops, Car Dealers, and Gas Stations per capita.

As I stated earlier, Connecticut was ranked as the #22 best state to drive in 2026, one of our New England neighbors was ranked as the best - Vermont landed at #1. Maine just edged Connecticut at #19, and New York at #24. In the 'Worst' half of the 25 Massachusetts landed at #33, Rhode Island at #40, and New Hampshire at #43.

I've always been under the impression that the Northeast and New England in particular was too congested for distracted driving. Oh well, I was right.
