The personal finance website recently ranked the best states to have a baby by comparing all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Researchers looked at 31 different factors, including the cost of childbirth, access to quality healthcare, infant care expenses, the number of pediatricians, and how family-friendly each state is overall.

The average conventional delivery in the U.S. now costs more than $15,700, and even families with employer-sponsored health insurance are paying an average of nearly $2,600 out of pocket. Those costs can vary dramatically depending on where you live, which is why WalletHub took a closer look at which states offer the best overall experience for growing families.

Massachusetts claimed the top spot, followed by Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Connecticut landed at an impressive No. 7 overall, making it one of the 10 best states in the country to have a baby.

While Connecticut didn't score particularly well when it came to affordability, ranking 40th for cost, it made up for it in nearly every other category. The Nutmeg State ranked 11th for healthcare, 10th for baby-friendliness, and seventh for family-friendliness. In other words, it may cost more to have a baby here, but WalletHub's research suggests families are getting excellent medical care and a strong environment for raising children.
