Gourmet Grocery Lovers Face Balduccis Closure In Westport

One of the locations of the finest little gourmet grocery store that Fairfield County has to offer is going to permanently close in the next few months.

It's going to be a little bit harder for Fairfield County residents to find foie gras, caviar, USDA Prime beef, saffron, and other hard to find gourmet food items after February 2026, that's when the Balducci's market on the Post Road (Rt. 1) in Westport will close down for good. According to hartfordbusiness.com, Balducci's parent company Albertson's sent notice to state and local officials that the Westport location at 1385 Post Road E will cease operations by the end of February 2026.

Don't worry Balducci's fans, there will still be a Balducci's in Connecticut. The Balducci's Market on E. Putnam Avenue in Greenwich will be there for you, as well as the Scarsdale and Rye Brook stores in New York. There are also two locations in Virginia, and one in Maryland, so there will be six locations left after the upcoming Westport closure.

I'm a big fan of grocery stores, and I've shopped at the Westport Balducci's a few times over the years. It was a tight, clean space with high end and mid-level priced items only, there was no room for cheaper alternatives. The size of the store was comparable to the old IGA stores that were all across Connecticut, but nowhere near the space of Fresh Market, Whole Foods, or Big Y locations. Did the Wegmans in Norwalk siphon off the business from Westport? I'd say so.
